Brazo Fuerte — Sierra Cuicateca, Oaxaca
A century of sugarcane.
Three generations of the Krassel family. Certified organic sugarcane at 1,200 meters. Distilled on a custom continuous still that Max Krassel built himself after crossing an ocean.
Origin Story
From Germany to the Sierra Cuicateca — one century at a time.
Max Krassel was 16 years old when he left Germany in the aftermath of World War I. He found his way into the Sierra Cuicateca mountains of Oaxaca, where he fell in love with the land and a woman from the Cañada region. He never left.
Max learned to distill and built a custom continuous still of his own design — engineered to produce no heads and no tails. He planted organic sugarcane at altitude and crushed it on a mobile trapiche he brought to the cane fields.
Three generations later, Max's descendants still run the distillery on the same land, with the same still. Brazo Fuerte — Strong Arm — is their name for it. Imported by Bad Hombre Importing and distributed in California by Cultura Maguey.

Family Heritage
One hundred years in the making.
Max Krassel arrives in Oaxaca after fleeing post-WWI Germany at age 16. He settles in the Sierra Cuicateca and marries into a local Cañada family.
Max builds his custom continuous still and begins growing certified organic sugarcane at 1,200m elevation. Brazo Fuerte is born.
Second generation inherits and expands the distillery. The mobile trapiche system is refined and perfected.
Third generation continues production on the same still, same land, same methods. Distributed in California by Cultura Maguey.
Production Process
Organic cane. Native yeast. One continuous still.
Every step is driven by the land and the machine Max Krassel built. The still was designed to produce only the heart — no cuts needed.
Organic Sugarcane
Certified organic sugarcane grown at ~1,200m elevation in the Sierra Cuicateca. Altitude concentrates sugars and develops character.
Hand Harvest
Cane is harvested by hand at peak sugar content and transported to the mobile trapiche.
Mobile Trapiche
The family's traditional mobile trapiche mill crushes cane on-site in the fields. Fresh juice is extracted immediately after harvest.
Native Yeast Ferment
Wild native yeasts endemic to the Sierra Cuicateca microclimate. Fermentation 5–7 days.
Continuous Still
Max Krassel's custom continuous still — diesel-fueled to protect the forest. Engineered to produce no heads or tails.
Bottling
Bottled at natural proof without additives, colorants, or sweeteners.
Why It Matters
A spirit that predates the mezcal denomination.
Aguardiente de Caña
Aguardiente de caña is one of Mexico's oldest and most underappreciated spirit categories. Unlike rum, it is unaged and unblended — a direct expression of cane, land, and water. Brazo Fuerte predates the mezcal denomination by decades and has never needed it. It is sui generis: a spirit of one place, one family, one century.
California Availability
Brazo Fuerte is imported by Bad Hombre Importing and distributed exclusively in California and the West Coast by Cultura Maguey. Available through our online bottle shop and at select specialty retailers, restaurants, and bars. One of the rarest artisan cane spirits available in the United States.
Organic & Sustainable
The sugarcane is certified organic. The still is diesel-fueled by design — to protect the Sierra Cuicateca forest from firewood harvest. No synthetic inputs. No added yeasts. No shortcuts. A spirit that has always understood that the land is not a resource to be extracted, but a home to be maintained.
